About Counting the Omer
Sefirat HaOmer is a mitzvah to count 49 days from the night of 16 Nisan (after the first day of Passover) until Shavuot eve. The counting connects the Festival of Freedom (Passover) to the Festival of the Giving of the Torah (Shavuot) - 49 days of spiritual preparation.
During Temple times, an Omer offering of barley was brought on the first day of counting. Today, counting is done each evening after nightfall with a blessing.
During the Omer period, mourning customs are observed: no weddings, no haircuts, no live music - in memory of 24,000 students of Rabbi Akiva who died during this period. These customs are lifted on Lag BaOmer (day 33).
2026 dates: Counting begins Thu evening 4/2, Lag BaOmer Tue 5/5, Shavuot Fri 5/22.
